Junior Johanna Jones views the eclipse during lunchtime on Aug. 21, 2017, using safety glasses that Mr. Stanchos provided to students. “Seeing the eclipse was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Jones said. “I thought if you didn’t take a Snapchat, did it really happen? So I snapped it.” Other students, including those in Ms. Moyers’ engineering class, built pinhole cameras to view the eclipse. It was a total solar eclipse most visible along the path of totality that spanned the entire continental United States from the Pacific to the Atlantic coasts. Unlike the August 2017 eclipse, todays will likely not be accompanied by sunny weather. Photo originally appeared on page 4 of the 2018 Knight.

DRACULA’S VERSION OF COFFEEHOUSE: Each year as part of the Coffeehouse experience, Excalibur picks a theme to tie into their show, decorations and food that is served. Traditionally the theme follows along with an old storybook, and this year, the Excalibur staff members chose one they could really sink their teeth into… Dracula. Coffeehouse offers McCallum artists an opportunity to perform a poem, rap, original song or group act. The talent show-type environment sets the stage for these up-and-coming artists to present their material to a live audience, and gain more exposure. According to senior Ayden Lee, getting to be a part of Coffeehouse was memorable because it expanded his musical horizons in a way connected to McCallum. “I prepared for the show mainly by repeating my lyrics throughout the day and hopefully remembering them,” Lee said. “I played an original song titled ‘Palo Santo Splinters’ and it was a fairly new song that I had written, so it was a bit difficult.” Lee notes that while performing an original song was something of a daunting challenge, the Coffeehouse environment made him feel comfortable and at home while performing, and made it “worth it in the end.” “Right after I finished I heard everyone applaud,” Lee said. “It was super special to hear that.” Caption by Chloe Lewcock.

AN EVEN MATCH: Senior Caroline passes the ball down the field during the game against LASA last Wednesday. Earlier in the game, Owen scored McCallum’s sole goal by heading in a corner kick taken by senior Kat Klein. The game concluded with a 1-1 tie. Owen knew that her competition would be fierce before the game even started. “LASA is at a higher level than most of the teams we play,” Owen said. “This game was harder mentally because we’re not used to playing such close games.” Even though her team didn’t necessarily win, Owen is glad to not have had to walk home with a loss.  “I’m glad we got the first round against them out of the way without a loss because next time we’ll know what to expect,” she said.  Caption by JoJo Barnard.

REVIVING SPIRITS: Even though the Knights were down 0-35 at halftime, the one thing that always revives the student section is the McCallum Band. Taco Shack halftime is always thrilling for the MacBand faithful, seeing as its their first full run-through presented to the public. Sophomore tuba player Carlos Aldrete says that seeing the McCallum fans come back to life for the show definitely made the performance better. I saw a lot of students get hyped for our performance, which was fun, Aldrete said. I think it did raise spirits, Aldrete says that the band is getting off on the right foot this year, with special thanks to the new crop of freshmen. I have good confidence for this year. We have lots of experienced marchers and new techs to back us up, and I have faith in our freshmen class, so I expect us to do pretty well at competitions, said Aldrete. Aldrete said that the band has a few things to clean up, but overall their main goals are to keep spirits high throughout the game, especially at halftime, and to dominate in competition, as they have done in years prior. PINK FOR PROM: Seniors Vaughn Vandegrift, Peter Wiseman, Max Yehaskel and Alex Gold sing and dance their hearts out at Saturday’s “Under the Knight Sky” prom. Yehaskel and Wiseman stood out in the sea of black and navy suits as the pair opted for bright pink with contrasting, yet coordinating, shirts and ties. While the style decision seemed big to onlookers, for Yehaskel it was a simple choice. “I like pink, it’s a solid color,” he said. “It almost melted when I ironed it actually. It’s 100% polyester, and I got it from Kohl’s.” Yehaskel enjoyed prom overall, except when it came to the royalty announcement. “Someone stole prom queen from me,” he joked. “It was very tragic. But other than that, it was fun.” As prom marks another milestone at the end of senior year, Yehaskel is ready to sit back, relax and enjoy his last few weeks as a Knight. “My grades don’t matter anymore [and] after AP tests I’m done,” Yehaskel said. “I’m going to go nuts, and I’m going to start cooking more.” Caption by Francie Wilhelm.

Klein decided to commit to the McCallum academic team after competing in UIL academics as a high-schooler and believing that Knights had an opportunity to succeed in district. PART OF HISTORY: Principal Nicole Griffith, journalism teacher Dave Winter and science teacher Elaine Bohls-Graham pose with pride flags on the first day of AISD PRIDE Week. At his previous school in Midtown, Atlanta, Winter witnessed a similarly accepting and robust observance of PRIDE week. However, he feels that McCallums history and culture, particularly with Spectrum, make Macs PRIDE celebrations unique.  For as long as I have been at Mac and before that, [Spectrum] has been vital in providing a safe space for LGBTQ students to be themselves, Winter said. The group has had a lot of turnover with faculty sponsorship in recent years, but its essential role has stayed constant through all of that. I think that the main thing is that Spectrum and PRIDE Week helps to give students a voice on campus.  PRIDE Week closely followed Black History Month, where students and faculty organized similar events, like student panels. In both instances, Winter saw how crucial and courageous it is for students to lead the conversations on issues like identity.  I was impressed [by] the fearlessness and leadership of the panelists and the willingness of students and teachers to listen and work to understand better the experience of others, Winter said.  Caption by Francie Wilhelm. In his introduction of the Black History Month assembly on March 3, assistant principal Larry Featherstone said that the assembly intended to address the truth that “we need to learn more about people who do not look like us.” To move the conversation in that direction before turning the program over to a teen panel of Black students, Students of Color Alliance sponsor Tonya Moore answered “three questions youve always wanted to ask a Black friend.” To the question “Can I touch your hair?” Moore said she answered yes to a close friend but felt the question was strange and inappropriate when coming from strangers. She responded to the second question—“Do black people get sunburn?”—with an emphatic “Yes.” The answer to the third question—“Do you prefer to be called Black or African American?”—Moore said, “It’s a preference. I prefer to be called Black. and I don’t like African-American, but my daughters would give different answers to the question.” Caption by Gergő Major.

In one memorable portion of his presentation, UT history professor Dr. Leonard Moore likened the economic legacy of this discrimination to a messed up version of Monopoly where he (representing a Black southerner) plays a board game with white neighbors in which he was not allowed to buy anything until after going around the board 20 times.

LET THEM EAT CAKE: Senior Scarlett Bowmen (left) and junior Edie Birkholz (right) walk down the runway holding two cakes in outfits designed by seniors Jaoquin Godines, Clarrisa Villarreal and Esme Moreno. After directing the fashion show last year, Birkholz decided to get involved in a new way. Modeling was nerve-racking, but with her previous knowledge of the fashion show Birkholz was ready for the challenge.  “I was like third to go on so I was definitely nervous about messing up,” Birkholz said. “But I thought it was fun to be pampered and put on an outfit that I didn’t have to choose. I was initially going to change during half-time and put on a different thing, but I was like I don’t feel like doing that. I felt awesome and beautiful in Joaquin, Clarrisa and Esme’s stuff.” Birkholz enjoyed every part of the show and the outfit she wore, but her favorite part was the hoopskirt.  “I felt like a cake. I felt like I was the cake, and I think everyone should wear hoopskirts to school,” Birkholz said. “ I was like walking around backstage and telling everyone to move because I was taking up so much space. BACK TOGETHER AGAIN: Former McCallum soccer players pose for a group photo at the annual varsity vs. alumni match. The teams of graduated Knights consisted of students as recent as the Class of ‘22 all the way back to 2003. After two years of COVID delays, coach Nick Martin was finally able to hold the match on Dec. 28.  “[The alumni game] provides like a continuity for the program. It doesn’t matter what year you are,” Martin said. While some organizational changes were made to the event this year, with matches being held tournament style rather than a free-for-all, Martin maintained the spirit of community that the match holds for his past and current players.  “Getting the chance to come back and see each other whilst also playing some soccer is something me and my friends have a hard time turning down,” class of 2021 alumn Aiden Golliher said. “I’d predict and hope that as the years continue, the close-knit community the boys varsity had will continue [and] that will allow this program to grow.” Caption by Francie Wilhelm. REPPING THE SENIOR: Senior Helena Finos dances at the Winter Fairytale Dance last friday. Finos had been planning to come to the event from the start due to her position as senior class president. “I wanted to come represent my class and it turned out to be a lot of fun so I’m glad I went!” she said. Finos was also pleasantly surprised by the number of students that showed up after disappointing crowds at prior events. “It was a lot of fun [since] a lot of people came,” she said. “Which I didn’t necessarily expect since we didn’t have the best turnout at the last dance. SUNNY CALIFORNIA: Principal Nicole Griffith poses with her wife Brenda and son Langston at the golden gate bridge in San Francisco. For Griffith, Thanksgiving break is perfectly timed.  “Thanksgiving comes at just the right time every year when we all really need a mental break from school, and this year I was able to completely forget that I was a high school principal and just be on vacation with my family. I didn’t check my email which I needed to do. It was a nice refresher. In their time in California, the group, along with Griffith’s mother, saw sights such as Alcatraz, took a cable car ride, rode a train and visited the science museum. “San Francisco is a fun place to be but it is also a place that is special to our family,” Griffith said. “My wife lived there and really loves it. I always joke that she left her heart there and we have to go pick it up every once and a while.” Most excited for the trip was Langston.  “[My son] loves travel. He gets so excited. He is a definite travel bug, which I don’t know where he gets that. But he loves travel, loves being around his grandparents. It was really great.” The young adventurer got to lean his head out the window on the train, learn cards with his grandmother and explore all of the sea creatures at the aquarium. Griffith was also thankful to miss the rainy weather in Austin. “The weather was beautiful [in San Francisco],” Griffith said. “We missed all the rain in Texas. By the time we got back on Saturday it had passed. But it was sunny in San Francisco and super clear. We never didn’t have these beautiful expanses of light.”  Photo courtesy of Nicole Griffith. A GRAND OPENING: To kick off A Knight at McCallum showcase off, the orchestra played a piece from “Spirituals for Strings” by Morton Gould. The music was supposed to imitate a train, which is what makes it such a crowd-pleaser according to first violinist Ingrid Smith.  “My favorite part of the night was that we got to open the showcase,” Smith said. “I’m super proud of the orchestra for putting on an awesome performance that I’m sure the audience loved.” Smith hoped that the show helped inspire current middle-schoolers to come to McCallum for high school. Back when she was in their place, Smith remembers the orchestra putting on a very passionate performance which she enjoyed listening to.  “It’s crazy to think that I’m in their position now,” Smith said. “I’m so excited for the next generation of Mac orchestra students to experience the amazing things the program has to offer.” Caption by JoJo Barnard. Photo by Morgan Eye.

Sophomore middle blocker Greta Carlson elevates to play the ball over two TSD defenders during the Knights’ 25-11, 25-15 victory after two losses earlier during the second day of play at the AISD Jason Landers Invitational Tournament. While the victory was encouraging, the lessons learned in the team’s losses to two San Antonio powerhouses (Stevens and Macarthur) were more valuable in the long run. “The game (against Stevens) for me personally was a learning moment,” said Carlson’s teammate Saraiah Taylor said. “Getting to know my teammates and how they react to certain things. I know we have the potential to go really far; we just have to communicate with each other. We all love playing together; [we] just [have] a few things that need to be fixed.” Senior outside hitter Jette Morris said that the skills necessary to compete well in volleyball are so interrelated that struggles in one area can directly impact everything the team is trying to do.  “We played pretty well the first set against Stevens,” Morris said, “but we lost our edge around 20 points in.”  Morris elaborated on how a team’s momentum can unravel. “Volleyball is so integrated that if the serve isnt aggressive, the other team gets a big swing; if the block doesnt close its tough to give the setter a good pass. Sometimes you have a stinker of a day and I did. We kind of did, collectively.” The team’s struggles continued into the team’s second match against MacArthur, a game the Knights’ ultimately lost, but even in defeat, the Knights showed their mettle. On one memorable play in the second set, senior setter Sariah Taylor dove to keep the ball in play but suffered an injury in the process. “I’m going to do what needs to be done for my team even if that means getting hurt,” Taylor said of the play. “The double loss was not the best for the team, but I know that we can come back from that.” After beating TSD to end their Friday games, the Knights won all three matches on Saturday and then split their final two games on Sunday to win the consolation final of the tournament’s Copper Bracket. ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES: Seniors Mira Wagner and Tyler Mankinen duke it out during the first moments of the final round at the Cap City Marching Competition. The 2022 marching show “Seeing Stars” gets its name from its boxing theme, and according to Wagner, who represents the woodwinds section, the early fight scene “definitely sets the tone.” “Right off the bat you see two people fighting so you know that this show is full of energy,” Wagner said.”  “Even throughout the show the woodwinds and brass are ‘competing’ against each other which goes with the boxing theme.” Mankinen, who represents the brass section, believes the fight scene is a crucial element in the marching show.  “[The fight scene] usually gets the crowd pumped up and draws the attention of the audience into the show,” Mankinen said. “The show is super unique and seeing the crowd react to an unconventional element of a marching show is really exciting.”  Caption and photo by Morgan Eye.

HE LOVES ME, HE LOVES ME NOT: Junior Charlotte Blackmon (Eurydice) performs one of the final scenes in the second act of MacTheatre’s production of Eurydice. During the scene, Eurydice, who has just reconnected with Orpheus in the underworld, contemplates whether or not Orpheus is truly her husband or not. For Blackmon, developing such a complex character took time. “Eurydice is probably the most difficult character I’ve ever played,” Blackmon said. “I got an idea of who she was when I read the script, but running the scenes and physically being in the position of the character helped me connect to her more.” Reporting by Alice Scott.

Hundreds of students walked out of their third-period classes on Monday Nov. 15 in a show of support for students who have been victims of sexual abuse or sexual assault. The group met in the band parking lot and then marched around the perimeter of the school, stopping often to hear personal stories of assault and survival. Each story elicited embraces and statements of support from members of the crowd.

A soap dispenser removed from the wall in a McCallum restroom. This has occasionally been an issue in past years, however, with devious licks becoming so popular, custodial staff has been unable to keep up with demand. “Right now, there is a backorder of soap,” head custodian Daniel Cena said. “Most of the time, its not a big deal because we have enough, but we actually ran out and we had to call the service centre and ask them for some emergency soap.”
