This is sophomore staffer Esmé Moreno’s first year on the newspaper staff. She decided to join after loving her first year in photojournalism. Outside of newspaper Esmé plays soccer for McCallum and for a club team. In her free time she loves to hangout with her friends and paint. She’s so excited to expand on her writing and photography and can’t wait for the rest of the year!

CAPTAINS AT TWILIGHT: Seniors Ez Guenther, Jake Hissey, Jaxon Rosales and Johan Holmes lineup for the coin toss before their last non-district game against the Kerrville Tivy Antlers. For Hissey, it was his first game back after suffering a wrist injury before the team’s marquee matchup against the Anderson Trojans. Despite wearing a cast that prompted the opposing coaches to urge their offensive skill players to run at "the one-armed safety," Hissey held his own, nearly making an interception to seal the victory on the play before Guenther succeeded in doing the same. The Knights went on to beat Tivy 23-15 in a game that despite Tivy’s 0-4 record, they were not favored to win. Caption by Thomas Melina Raab.

RAIN? NO, MAKE THAT REIGN: While flash floods earlier in the day quite literally threatened to dampen the outdoor prom, the event went on as scheduled, and by all accounts was a smashing success. Senior class sponsor Amy Smith secured a covered warehouse area to retreat to and a class set of rain ponchos if the weather forced prom goers to seek cover, but the rain ended up being more of a trilfle than a tragedy. “I can honestly say that was the best prom ever and the kids were so great,” Smith reported on the McCallum senior parents Facebook page. “They were so polite and appreciative. Absolutely no problems at all. They were perfect and we had a blast.” Principal Nicole Griffith echoed that sentiment telling MacJournalism Saturday night that it was a great night for the senior class and the school community. Because of the pandemic all of my family has had to work from home and it's been a hard transition for us all. uring his singles match against Crockett, junior Beckett Randall serves the ball to his opponent. He went on to win the first set, 6-3, and was up, 3-2, in the second when his match was cut off due to MAC’s 10th win, which clinched the team victory. Earlier that morning, Randall played his doubles match with junior Luke Robb against Crockett which they lost, 6-3, 7-5. They played again that afternoon, losing to Dripping Springs. Randall played his final singles match of the first day against Dripping Springs, losing the first set, 6-1 and trailing 3-1 in the second before the match was cut short because the Tigers had already clinched a team win. On Wednesday, Randall played doubles with Robb against Lockhart where they were defeated, 7-5, 6-1.  He then went on to play his final match of districts, a singles match against Lockhart. He lost the first set, 7-5, and lead in the second, 1-0, before the match was cut short by Lockhart clinching the team win. Photo by Esme Moreno.
