MAN AND DOG CAVE: During the first weeks of quarantines, I set up an office in the garage so that I could have room to spread out that wouldnt encroach on my wifes work space. It worked well until the temperatures started to rise, and the garage became an uncomfortable place to set up shop. With my wife inside the house and my office in the garage, our poor dog had to choose a companion, and she changed his mind frequently as if the pledge of his allegiance was troubling him. DIRECTOR AND NOW MOTHER: Allison Kashdan conducts the varsity choir at the McCallum Choir concert that took place on Oct. 3. That concert was the only one Kashdan conducted before taking her maternity leave to have her daughter, Acadia Kashdan. Kashdan passed the torch to Malcolm Nelson, who conducted the pre-UIL concert weeks before the quarantine shut down the actual UIL competition. Although the choir students are enjoying learning from Nelson, they await reuniting with their director. Sophomore Charlotte Bearse, a varsity choir member, admires Kashdan for the way she treats her students. “She’s such a sweet human being and I love how kind she is to all of her students and I love how she treats everyone,” Bearse said. “I feel like I can respect her and go to her with things.” Photo by Annabel Winter.

CLOSE CALL: The host Navarro Vikings only had enough players for one subvarsity game, so they elected to send their freshmen out the challenge the freshman Knights, and the decision produced a very competitive came. Tied at 13, the Vikings built a led that the rest of the way, but the game Knights did not go down with a fight. Coach Joshua Amy said the comeback was a team effort. Breon Green and Jaden Stewart really played like team captains and communicated well, Amy said. They rarely get off the court. Breon has done a great job stepping into a role he hasnt played yet: being our point guard. With two of our starters out, it took him a little bit to get acclimated to the role, but he showed tons of potential. When his shot is on, he is fun to watch. He also had high praise for Stewart. Jaden is our big body post player who has the ability to go coast to coast at any moment. He commands the paint and is the backbone of the team right now. Amy also singled out the defensive effort of Shamar Hose and Deion McClain Martinez. Green led the charge as the Knights whiddled away at the Viking lead until they had time for one last possession trailing by three points. The Knights had several good looks at a game tying 3-pointer, but the basketball gods frowned on overtime as the game ended in favor of the home team, 35-32. Photo by Annabel Winter.
