David Winter, adviser
David Winter is the journalism adviser for The Shield. He attended the University of Texas and has been teaching for a total of 34 years, 20 of those years at McCallum. His love for journalism centers around passion, and the excitement shown by people when they are asked about the things they love. No matter what it is, if you have something to say he is there to listen. Winter is also very skilled and enjoys photography. Aside from journalism Mr. Winter also loves to travel. This summer he visited Maine, New Mexico, and Michigan. Mr. Winter’s music taste has changed throughout the years but now he listens mainly to ‘80s and ‘90s alternative music. Faye Webster, who was one of his old students, is one of his favorites.

“It feels amazing knowing that I can finally contribute to Pink Week,” Briceño said. “I have wanted this for a long time, and so finally participating in it has been truly fulfilling.”
Briceño claimed that her favorite part of the whole week was connecting with the other PALS, which she was able to do at the nail salon.
“It [Pink Week] is a good way to connect with my classmates while contributing to something meaningful,” she said. “I loved being in the nail salon because I felt such a joy in painting nails and applying face glitter to get everyone pink-ified.”
Throughout the entire week, Briceño said she had mixed emotions.
“It was a bittersweet but exciting feeling as this was my first and last Pink Week in PALS,” she said. “I was just trying to soak it all up and live in the moment as much as possible.”

![BACK TOGETHER AGAIN: Former McCallum soccer players pose for a group photo at the annual varsity vs. alumni match. The teams of graduated Knights consisted of students as recent as the Class of ‘22 all the way back to 2003. After two years of COVID delays, coach Nick Martin was finally able to hold the match on Dec. 28.
“[The alumni game] provides like a continuity for the program. It doesn’t matter what year you are,” Martin said.
While some organizational changes were made to the event this year, with matches being held tournament style rather than a free-for-all, Martin maintained the spirit of community that the match holds for his past and current players.
“Getting the chance to come back and see each other whilst also playing some soccer is something me and my friends have a hard time turning down,” class of 2021 alumn Aiden Golliher said. “I’d predict and hope that as the years continue, the close-knit community the boys varsity had will continue [and] that will allow this program to grow.”
