TAKING CHARGE: Senior Miles McCollum leads the Knights onto the same field where he suffered a season-ending injury a year ago. Although he and his teammates were unable to turn the final score the Knights' way, McCollum made an impact on the game, often drawing multiple Lehman blockers when he lined up on defense.

NSPA Fall 2022 Best of Show winner Jolie Gabriel, sports action photo, ninth place "RAIDER REPELLENT" The varsity volleyball team swept the Northeast Raiders on Tuesday in its first district match of the season. The Knights cruised in the first set, 25-11. Freshman Lexi Rosenblatt said Tuesday's game allowed the team to work on specific issues within a game setting. "It was a good chance to run plays," Rosenblatt said. "We needed to work on communicating more and talking on the court." The varsity put together its most dominant set in the second, winning by 16 points, 25-9. The Knights lost their early momentum in the final set, still winning, but the Raiders competed much more evenly before the Knights ultimately prevailed, 25-18, to complete the sweep. "We just fell out of it during that last set," Rosenblatt said. "We got lazy because we knew we would win even if we didn't try that hard. We stopped communicating." The varsity plays LBJ this Friday at LBJ at 7:30 p.m. It's the first varsity game between the two traditional rivals since LBJ rejoined the UIL district for 5A AustinISD schools this school year. ROAD COURT ADVANTAGE: Mac fans erupt in celebration as the Knights win a point en route to their straight-set victory on the road at LASA on Sept. 9.  Senior Julia Wallace was among the boisterous Knight fans who traveled with the team to encourage them as they played. “I was so excited that varsity was killing it and beating LASA,” Wallace said. “I thought it was a really good game. The team really had to play. There was good competition, and we still pulled through and won.” The win was the varsity's fourth district win in four tries. It came quickly as Mac jumped out to an early first-set lead and never looked back. “ We put a lot of effort and training into this game,” senior co-captain Rachel Nabhan said. “It was nice to see it pay off.” The first set was the closest the game got, with a score of 25-18. As the game progressed and the Knights gained more confidence, the sets got shorter and shorter. The second produced a score of 25-13, and the third, 25-9. Photo by Jolie Gabriel. FUN WITH FRIENDS: Sophomores Hazel Trominski, Julia Rasp and Zalie Mann pose for the camera during Pink Week’s lunch festivities. Clearly, their evil plan did not work as the photo appears in this essay. Winter said the best part of prom was seeing people all dressed up. “It was fun to see how different people are when they get dressed up and how different they are from each other.” She said. Many of the most memorable looks were artistic and unique. “It was fun to see that side of people.” She also said the venue, 800 Congress, was the perfect blend of formal and relaxed. The varsity players on the court at game's end leap into the air, shouting and smiling after they had just won their last home game of the season. The score was 14-10 in the tiebreaker set against undefeated Ann Richards. Junior Grace Werkenthin tipped the ball onto the other side of the net, propelling the team to a 3-2 victory. “It was really exciting to final win that last set," Werkenthin said. "I was just really happy to help win with me team and see their reaction after the last point. Everyone was so excited to beat Ann Richards and to ruin the perfect record they had, so everyone was just screaming and hugging each other.”

Senior Brienna Martinez has been in the middle for Knights' efforts to compete for a district title and an elusive first playoff win. She was the libero on Tuesday night as the Knights handed the previously undefeated Ann Richards Stars their first district loss in an instant class five-set match. Martinez had 18 digs and 10 assists for the Knights in the match.

According to assistant principal Andy Baxa, the CDC identifies volleyball, football and basketball as higher risk sports so the student-athletes playing those sports will be assigned to learning groups with their teammates and coaches if they choose in-person learning on Monday. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: At Community First they have many art programs and different ways for people to express their artistic side. One thing they had at this event was a guy blowing glass ornaments to sell. They had him set up in a central area where everyone could watch him. Avah Sheffey and her parents got an ornament for their christmas tree. Avah said that she “really liked getting a glass ornament made from scratch.” Many people enjoyed watching him blow the glass.
