One way to restore American pride, South Bend, Ind., mayor Pete Buttigieg said, would be to unite under a common cause, the way Americans united together during the race to the moon in the late 1960s when, he said, “We were working together on something hard. America’s best moments have consisted of us summoning that.” He said he wants to turn American attitudes toward climate change away from feelings of fear and guilt to a feeling of pride by starting a national project to solve it as a nation. “People need to know how they fit in,” he said mentioning American farmers specifically as players in the national initiative to reverse climate change. “Not only are we not going to harm them. We need them.”
