AUSTIN RELAYS RECAP: Freshman Jolie Gabriel and sophomore Charlotte Stevens each captured first place in their respective events to lead a large contingent of Mac track and field athletes competing in the Austin Relays last Thursday at Burger Center. Gabriel earned first place in women’s junior varsity high jump by clearing 4 feet, 8 inches, a personal best. Stevens meanwhile cleared 9 feet even in women’s junior varsity pole vault to capture first place in that event. Senior Bryn Lewis was the lone second place finisher after taking second place in men’s junior varsity triple jump with a personal-best jump of 39 feet even. Sophomore Chris Riley had the best day among varsity runners winning third place in two men’s events: the 1600 meters (4:42.03) and the 3200 meters (9:57.00). In men’s varsity high jump, two Knights placed in the top six with jumps of five feet, six inches. Omari Hil took third and Edward Johnson, sixth. Senior Lily Parker was the top finisher on the women’s varsity side. She earned a third-place finish in the 100 meters at 13:51. Parker was also fifth in the womens varsity 200 meters at a personal-best 27.75. Like Parker, Johnathan Porter placed in the top six by earning personal-best times in two speed events. He was fourth in the men’s varsity 200 meters at 23.72 and sixth in the 100 meters at 11.66. Sophomore Selena De Jesus-Leyva also placed in the top five in two events. She was fourth in the women’s JV shot put with a personal-best 30 feet, 2.5 inches, and she was fifth in the women’s JV discus at a personal best 88 feet, 1 inch. Her teammate, freshman Aasja Wren was fourth in women’s JV discus at a personal best 88 feet, 8 inches. Junior Luke Allen placed fourth in the men’s junior varsity 800 meters with a personal record time of 2:13.54. Freshman Helena Finos was fourth in the womens JV high jump at a personal-best 4 feet, 6 inches. The meeting included the boys and girls basketball teams, their parents, plus school and district officials. The meeting addressed the recent controversy over the district’s decision to remove the basketball banners from the large gym on Jan. 10. The controversy centered around the hand symbol that a referee makes to indicate that a shot attempt is beyond the 3-point arc. In the symbol, the thumb and index finger form a circle and the remaining three fingers are extended. The hand symbol appeared in both banners. District officials ordered the removal of the banners because of concern that the gesture has more recently been associated with white supremacy. In her prepared statement, Del Valle acknowledged that the gesture may cause hurt because of its recent “hateful use” toward minority groups but she argued that well-intentioned people should reclaim the symbol’s meaning because it has been used to indicate three points in basketball and also “OK” long before it took on the more sinister meaning. ”We should not let hateful people have power over us,” Del Valle said. A search on Wikipedia reveals that the “OK symbol” has multiple other ascribed meanings. It is the ambiguity of the symbol that has prompted groups like the Antidefamation League to urge people to use caution when evaluating the symbol, as one parent pointed out at Tuesday’s meeting. The ADL also notes on its website the worldwide increase of the symbol’s use in 2019 to express white supremacy. Dr. Shapiro began the meeting by expressing regret that the district did not have a set procedure in place to handle the controversy over the banners. He said that a policy has been developed that will prevent similar problems from recurring in the future. He stressed that he did not think that any Mac basketball players meant to convey a discriminatory message with the symbol as it appeared in the banners. FINDING THE MEANING OF LIFE: In Grand Hotel, senior Tosh Arora plays the role of Otto Kringlein, a sick man searching for the meaning of life. After just having a coughing fit, he is escorted to a chair where he is repeatedly asking for a room at the grand hotel, after being denied because of his Jewish faith. During this moment, Arora is singing the number “Just let my Feet Roam Free,” and about to move into a larger number of the musical. “It was an honor to play such a deep role, and it made me appreciate my life more,” Arora said, “It served as an exploration for me to understand the unique character and the gift of life.” Photo by Gabby Sherwood.

John Moore’s latest accomplishment in the photojournalism world, was winning the 2018 World Press Photo of the Year. His winning picture was part of a series of work on the undocumented crossings at the southern border and showed a young girl crying while her mother is detained by border patrol agents. Recounting the events that transpired, Moore said: “She [the border patrol agent] said ‘Look, you gotta set her down.’ and so when she set her daughter down, she immediately started to cry.” Moore has had some challenges with this photo being taken out of context, even Time Magazine cut out and used part of the photo in a misleading way. The actual story behind the photo is that the family was being taken, together, to a processing center and if they were to be separated was unknown. The 92nd annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays took place this past weekend at the Mike A. Myers memorial stadium. The relays hosted thousands of runners from 37 states and 23 countries. The Relays were not just high school athletes competing, but college and elite athletes as well. The track meet lasted Thursday through Saturday, holding every running and field event for each division.
