Logan Davis is a junior and a second-year staff member on the Shield. Davis specializes in photography and writing opinion pieces for the print issue and online website. Davis finds the Shield to be a good platform to make change on issues he cares about. Outside of journalism, Davis plays varsity tennis for the McCallum team and for a club team. Davis hopes to continue with tennis through college and later pursue a career in the medical field.

According to a recent study by the Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that provides support to LGBT youth, 51% of all nonbinary and transgender people ages 18 and under had seriously contemplated suicide. One in five had made an attempt on their own life in the last year. Those receiving gender-affirming hormone treatment reduced their odds of experiencing depression and of a past-year suicide attempt by 40%. Source: Journal of Adolescent Health, The Trevor Project.

In his introduction of the Black History Month assembly on March 3, assistant principal Larry Featherstone said that the assembly intended to address the truth that “we need to learn more about people who do not look like us.” To move the conversation in that direction before turning the program over to a teen panel of Black students, Students of Color Alliance sponsor Tonya Moore answered “three questions you've always wanted to ask a Black friend.” To the question “Can I touch your hair?” Moore said she answered yes to a close friend but felt the question was strange and inappropriate when coming from strangers. She responded to the second question—“Do black people get sunburn?”—with an emphatic “Yes.” The answer to the third question—“Do you prefer to be called Black or African American?”—Moore said, “It’s a preference. I prefer to be called Black. and I don’t like African-American, but my daughters would give different answers to the question.” Caption by Gergő Major.

Casey's win led to McCallum's win, 10-9 over Connally. “It came down to Peyton and it was 9-9, and everyone realized that this is the match to determine who wins the whole thing,” Coach Purkiss said. “So everybody was there and their team was on their side and our team was on our side and we were cheering Peyton on every great play that she made so it was great to support her and see her play her best.”
