Coming off a narrow 2-1 victory in its season opener against Austin High and a weather cancellation that wiped out Friday’s scheduled game against Eastside, the boys varsity soccer team kicked off against Canyon Lake on Tuesday night in fine form and didn’t skip a beat in dispatching the Hawks, 5-0, at Nelson Field.

I had asked the team to play more patiently, looking for opportunities to attack, and they did.

A quick start to the first half saw the Knights take a majority of possession and be benefited for their time on the ball with a goal from junior forward Luis Auyero taking the team into half time a goal to the good.

“I had asked the team to play more patiently, looking for opportunities to attack, and they did,” varsity coach Nicholas Martin said.

Attacking was the name of the game and the team was up to the task. A flurry of second half goals saw the Blues in command of the game in no time taking every opportunity that came their way with precision and consistency. A brace (two goals) from sophomore forward Silvio Guzman put the team in cruise control before junior midfielders Jake Anderson and Moss Gillespie made it safe.

Anderson expressed contentment in his team’s showing.

“I feel like our team played pretty well last night,” he said. “We were able to make pretty good runs and score off of them, and our defense played pretty well too.”

Anderson also noted the fantastic contribution of the defense as well as the offensive play to make everything gel as a unit.

Gillespie agreed that he and his team made a good showing Tuesday but also said that there is still room for the team to get better.

“I thought I did well, but I still have a lot more effort to put in and things to learn in this season,” Gillespie said.

His coach agreed.

“There’s plenty for us to work on,” Martin said, “but we’ve been improving every match, and I’m hopeful that we’ll be in good shape to compete when district matches begin soon.”

Soon would be Friday Jan. 24 when the Knights host arch-rival LBJ at House Park (varsity at 7:30 p.m., JV-A at 6 p.m. and JV-B at 4:45 p.m.).

The varsity and the JVA squad travel to Elgin Friday night as they look to keep this young winning streak going.
