The Shield staff learned this week that it had collected eight 2016 print Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
Photo editor Maya Coplin (’16) and staff reporter Charlie Holden (’18) each collected two awards, and each of them won a second place award. Coplin won second place in magazine cover design, and Holden won second in caption writing.
The six certificate of merit winners were Coplin for photo illustration, Holden for personal opinion column (on-campus issues), editor-in-chief Haley Hegefeld (’16) for information graphics portfolio, design editor Hannah Ilan (’16) for full-page photo layout, Sophie Ryland (’19) for personality profile, and co-editor in chief Natalie Murphy (’16), news editor Mara Vandegrift (’16) and staff reporter Maddie Doran (’18) for news briefs.
The Columbia University Journalism School, which sponsors CSPA, received total of 6,420 entries for the competition from students at colleges, universities and secondary schools throughout the United States.
Judges cited a total of 1,267 winners for either First, Second or Third Place or for Certificates of Merit for those deemed worthy of honorable mention in a category.
