Quince fotos durante quince años

Quinceañeras are an important coming of age ritual, originally meant to mark the transition from adolescence to adulthood. They are a moment for celebration and family, although typical quinceñeras can be prohibitively expensive. Having a community sponsored quinceñeara like the one held by McCallum offers the opportunity for this important identity forming experience to families who may not have been able to throw one on their own.

Las quinceañeras son momentos importantes para la llegada de madurez, creado para marcar la transición de niñez a adulto. Son unos momentos para celebrar con familia, pero típicamente son prohibitivamente caras. Teniendo la quince patrocinada por la comunidad como la de McCallum ofrece la oportunidad para la experiencia de formación de identidad a familias que tal vez no hayan podido tener una por su propia cuenta.

FROM GIRL TO WOMAN: On Saturday May 18, McCallum celebrated its fifth annual quinceanera. McCallum hosts this event for girls who were unable to have their own quinceañera. This event is able to happen because of generous support from sponsors and donations.

The beautiful decorations and music set the mood for this joyous occasion where their girls will become young ladies.

A BOUQUET OF PRINCESSES: Quinceañeras Gabriella Ramirez, Pia Sosa, Elizabeth Peables, Sophia Lopez, Malia Nevins, Victoria Lopez and Carley Seiler line up for a group picture before they perform the traditional waltz with their partners that is an essential component of most quinceañera ceremonies. “We all complimented each other on one another’s dresses and talked about how excited we were,” said Sophie Lopez who is positioned exactly in the middle of the group photo. “It was nice just to stand together and capture this brilliant moment of our transition from childhood to adulthood in time.”

QUEEN OF THE QUINCEAÑERA: At the fifth annual school Quinceañera, Saturday May 18, Sra. Altamirano Cancino (Sra. A)—shown here next to quinceañera, Carley Castro-Sieler, and her dancer partner, Michael Antunez—is proud to be running her first one. Even though she helped seven girls have their dream quince, she never got one of her own, “I did not have a quince, and that’s why I think this is so special to me” she said. Sra. A is hoping to host more quinces in the future and continue the McCallum tradition.

REINA DE LA QUINCEAÑERA: En la quinta quinceañera anual de la escuela de McCallum, Sábado 18 de Mayo, la Sra Altamirano Cancino— aquí junto a la quinceañera, Carley Castro-Seiler, y compañero de baile, Michael Antunez—está orgullosa de ser encargada de su primer evento. Aunque ella ayudó a siete chicas a tener la quince de sus sueños, ella nunca tuvo su propia quinceañera, “Yo no tuve un quince, y yo pienso que por eso es tan importante para mi.” Dijo la Sra. A. Pia Sosa wasn’t planning on doing much for her 15th birthday, but when Sra. A asked her to be part of the school-run quinceañera, she didn’t hesitate. “You only turn 15 once so why not throw a party?” Pia said. Culture is a part of her life that often goes unnoticed, so having this chance to celebrate her culture with friends and family was a great opportunity. “I wanted to celebrate my culture and have fun with my friends.”

Pia Sosa no tenía planes para su cumpleaños de 15, pero cuando Sra. A le preguntó si quería ser parte de la quinceñera ella no dudo en participar. “ Solo cumples 15 años una vez entonces ¿Por que no tener una fiesta?” dijo Pia. La cultura es parte de su vida que a menudo pasa desapercibido, tener esta posibilidad para celebrar su cultura con amigos y familia fue una gran oportunidad. “Quise celebrar mi cultura y divertirme con mis amigos”.

DANCING QUEEN ONLY 15: The Mccallum quinceañera took place Saturday May 18 in the cafeteria. Students who danced at the quinceañera practiced for weeks during lunch and after school with the help of Señora A to perfect this special moment. “I signed up for fun and for the dress originally, but I actually made a lot of friends, and it helped me want to come back to practice,” said Elizabeth Peables, a freshman quinceñeara. “It’s been stressful, but it always works. We stayed very late yesterday [the day before the event], but today it feels like everything came together.”

HAND AND HOOF: Valentina Altamirano-Cancino, daughter of McCallum’s very own Spanish teacher Sra. Telvi Altamirano-Cancino, grins joyfully while wearing a hoof from the horse-shaped piñata, recently decapitated. As a return visitor to the quinceñeara, Altamirano-Cancino attended in style. Upon being told that she looked like a little princess by a passerby, Altamirano-Cancino asserted “I know!”

STEPPING OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE: Elizabeth Peables (left) and her best friend Gabriella Ramirez (right) were both not planning on having a quinceañera until they heard about the school one. “I expected for it to be really awkward,” Elizabeth said, “but I actually made some really good friends here.” Peables said and

Ramirez agreed that they originally decided to be a part of the quince for the dress but are glad they stepped out of their comfort zones and for the memories they made.

EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS: The quinceañeras and their partners dance a traditional waltz together. The dance pairs began practicing during lunchtime on Wednesdays and Thursdays in early March. For freshman Sophie Lopez, wearing the green dress on the right of the frame, the day was special for several reasons. For one, the day of the celebration fell on her 15th birthday. For another, the McCallum event provided her an opportunity to have a quinceañera she would not have had otherwise. “I had always really wanted to have a quinceañera, but my family didn’t have enough time to plan for it, since my birthday was so close to the event,” said Lopez, who knew of the Mac quince because of her involvement in Ballet Folklórico. Lopez said the most important reason was her desire to create memories with her family and friends that she will always cherish. Other than that hope, she said she had no expectations of how the day would go. “I was really hoping that I wouldn’t trip on my dress during the waltz (I didn’t!) and that all my friends and family would turn up and have a good time,” Lopez said. “It totally exceeded my expectations. I had such a brilliant time, dancing and eating and celebrating.” Between family and friends, Lopez had 14 people in her party, but she singled out her friend Ada De La Garza, who served as her dance partner, as being the most special part of her day. “Instead of choosing a guy to do the dance with me, I asked her to be my partner instead, because I wanted to celebrate with someone I really loved,” Lopez said. “I’ve known Ada since I was little. She was so fun to dance with and laugh with, so honestly just getting to spend more time with her was the best part.”

SUPERANDO LAS EXPECTATIVAS: Las quinceañeras y sus compañeros bailan el vals tradicional juntos. Las parejas de baile empezaron a practicar durante los almuerzos los Miércoles y Jueves a principios de Marzo. Para Sophia Lopez de primer año, quien lleva el vestido verde a la derecha del marco, el día fue especial por varias razones. Primero, el día de la celebración cumplió sus quince años. Por otra parte, el evento de McCallum le dio la oportunidad que no hubiera tenido de otra manera. “Siempre quise tener una quinceañera, pero mi familia nunca tuvo suficiente tiempo para planificarlo, ya que mi cumpleaños estaba tan cerca del evento,” dijo Lopez, quien supo de la quince en McCallum porque está involucrada con el Ballet Folklórico. Lopez dijo que la razón más importante era su deseo de crear memorias con su familia y amigos que ella siempre apreciaría. Aparte de la esperanza de crear memorias, ella no tenía expectativas de cómo sería el día. “ Esperaba no tropezarme con mi vestido durante el vals ( Y no) y que mi familia y amigos vinieran y se la pasaran bien.” dijo Lopez. “Totalmente superó mis expectativas. Me lo pasé genial bailando, comiendo y celebrando.” Entre familia y amigos Lopez tenía 14 personas en su grupo, pero señaló a su mejor amiga Ada de la Garza, quien fue su compañera de baile, fue la parte más especial del día. “En vez de escoger a un muchacho para bailar conmigo, le pregunté que fuera mi pareja en lugar, porque quería celebrar con alguien que de verdad amo.” dijo Lopez. “He conocido a Ada desde que eramos chiquitas. Fue muy divertido bailar y reír con ella, honestamente pasar más tiempo con ella fue la mejor parte.”

QUICK OUTFIT CHANGE: In addition to a traditional waltz in elaborate gowns, the quinceañeras and their partners also had the option of participating in a more upbeat dance to two popular Spanish songs. Freshman Sophie Lopez, shown in the center dancing with her partner Ada De La Garza, said that prior to the dance, the quinceaneras changed out of their formal gowns in the Spanish hall classrooms during the hour break between the waltz and the surprise dance. Lopez enjoyed the optional dance even though it was challenging to prepare for. “It was funner [because] the style of the dance was energetic and fast-paced,” she said. After the two dance performances, Lopez said there were opportunities for family and friends to take pictures and a less formal dancing period where popular songs were played, and the quinceañeras could dance with whomever they wanted.

CAMBIO RÁPIDO DE ROPA: Además de un vals tradicional en vestidos elaborados, las quinceañeras y sus compañeros también tenían la opción de participar en un baile con más ritmo a dos canciones populares en Español. Sopie Lopez de primer año, en el medio bailando con Ada De La Garza, dijo que antes del baile, las quinceañeras se cambiaron de su vestido de gala en los salones de las clases de Español durante el descanso de una hora entre el vals y el baile sorpresa. Lopez disfrutó del baile opcional aunque fue más difícil para prepararlo. “ Fue más divertido porque el estilo de baile fue más energético y más rápido,” dijo Lopez. Después de dos espectáculos de baile, Lopez dijo que había oportunidades para la familia y amigos para tomar fotos y un periodo de baile menos formal donde se tocaron canciones populares y las quinceañeras podían bailar con quien sea.

Sophomore chambelan Efrain Jaimes (right) dances with an audience member near the end of the quinceñeara on Saturday May 18. Jaimes acted as chambelan to freshman Elizabeth Peebles, and the two forged a friendship over the course of their preparation for the quinceñeara. According to Jaimes, he originally “signed up for extra credit, but then it turned out to be so much fun. It’s been two months of practice during lunch and lately, after school.”

Estudiante de segundo año y chambelan Efrain Jaimes (derecha) baila con un miembro del público al fin de la quinceañera Sábado 18 de Mayo. Jaimes fue el chambelán para la estudiante de primer año Elizabeth Peebles, y los dos crearon una amistad preparándose para la quince. “Originalmente, me inscribí por crédito extra, pero ha sido muy divertido. Juniors Daira Benitez and Maverick Palacios celebrate three years of friendship with an impromptu salsa. The two have had vastly different experiences with involvement in the Spanish program at McCallum. While Palacios is known around campus for his work on El Escudo, in Ballet Folklorico, and as a Fine Arts Ambassador, Benitez has been participating in Ballet Foklorico even before her time at McCallum, becoming co-president with Palacios their sophomore year. For this year’s quince, she choreographed, and helped with dresses and preparation as a volunteer although last year in addition to her volunteer work as a choreographer, she was a quinceñera herself.

Estudiantes de tercer año Maverick Palacios y Daira Benitez celebran su amistad con una salsa improvisada. Los dos han tenido experiencias totalmente diferentes participando en el programa de español de McCallum. Palacios es conocido por su trabajo en El Escudo, Ballet Folklorico, y como embajador del programa de bellas artes. Benitez ha participado en Ballet Folklorico desde antes de su tiempo en McCallum, asumiendo el rol de co-presidente con Palacios el año pasado. Para esta quince ella trabajó como coreógrafa voluntaria y ayudó con el vestuario y la preparación. El año pasado, además de ser quinceañera también trabajó como coreógrafa.

Senior Dylan Toruño and junior Maverick Palacios dancing bachata. A senior, Toruño only just joined Ballet Folklórico . Since joining, he’s participated in the cinco de mayo show as well as some other elementary field trips. The quince was his last even with the club, and he will be missed.
