Tis the season for holiday light displays and also digital media final exam photo essays. We are pleased to share one of our favorites in both categories with this week’s holiday-themed Tuesday Top 10. It’s not Tuesday of course, but during the holidays do we really ever know what day it is? Third-period photojournalist Nico Mehta paid a visit to the 37th Street Lights, a uniquely Austin holiday lights display that definitely honors the long-touted city mantra to keep it weird. Mehta’s photo walk down 37th Street also reminds us that the annual light display also provides a very bright colorful reminder of the events that made 2023 a most memorable year.
AN AUSTIN HOLIDAY TRADITION: The 37th Street Lights takes place in December every year. The light display is hosted by a group of volunteering neighbors who describe the event on their website as “The weirdest lights you will see this this holiday season.”
ON THE CORNER: The 37th Street Lights begin on 37th and Guadalupe. According to the Austin Chronicle, “It didn’t start out as lights. It started out as a wild art form and stayed that way.”
