The Knights basketball team fell to Vista Ridge on Feb. 24, 63-52. With this loss McCallum’s season is over.

“We played OK, not great,” senior Dimitri Kestenbaum said. “We definitely had way too many turnovers, though. That’s what killed us. It wasn’t their defense that was affecting us. It was just us not executing.”

McCallum fell to a seven-point deficit early in the first quarter but was able to battle back to trail only by a point going into the second quarter.

“I felt really good about how we battled back there [late in the first quarter],” Kestenbaum said. “I really thought we were going to get the win. The team was just really clicking at that point, and I think if we had played like that in the second half, the outcome of the game would have been really different.”

The Knights led at half time by three but were outscored in the second half 33-19.

“We really needed to handle the ball better in the second half,” Kestenbaum said. “Their press got us out of our game a little bit, but we also just had too many turnovers and we were not running our sets very well. There was also a stretch in the third quarter where we were not scoring, and that really hurt us.”

According to Kestenbaum, McCallum had chances to come back in the fourth quarter, like when they were down only six with two minutes left in the game.

“A key section in the game that we needed to win was at the end of the third quarter,” Kestenbaum said. “Even though we hadn’t been playing well, we were still only down a couple points, but we had an opportunity. If we got a stop on defense then went down and scored on offense right before the end of the quarter, it would have been huge and taken away their momentum.”
