In the fourth episode of Friday Knight Lights, hosts Julia Copas and Callen Romell talked with class of 1968 alumnus Tom Kite about his amateur career, life as a professional golfer and the legacy he’s leaving on the sport.
The 19-time PGA tour winner started his success by winning back-to-back individual state championships in 1967 and 1968 for McCallum. After being recruited by the University of Texas, he contributed to consecutive NCAA team championships in 1971 and 1972. Kite and fellow Longhorn Ben Crenshaw tied for the individual championship in ’72. While on the PGA tour, his most notable win was the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, earning Kite his lone major win. In 2004, at the end of his professional career, Kite was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Now, Kite is a golf course architect and mentors youth golfers.
