Tonight the McCallum Knights will clash for that traditional clangor, the Victory Bell, in the annual rivalry against the Travis Rebels. The bell represents the eighteenth year of friendly sportsmanship and fair play between the schools since the publications departments of each school bought the bell in 1954 from Southern Pacific Railroad. Travis has had possession of the bell for the seventh time since last year’s win of 28-10 and will hopefully relinquish it for the eleventh time to the McCallum Knights tonight.
The winning team has possession of the bell from the final whistle of the annual game until the teams meet again the next year. The nickel-plated bell, engraved with each year’s winner, will be guarded by Karen Beh-rens, Knight editor, and Cathy Croft, Shield editor, and publications representatives from Travis. At the sound of the final whistle, the winning team and coaches will ring the bell first. Afterward, all other students from the winning school will be allowed to ring it to celebrate the victory. But beware, ill luck follows all those ringing the bell after midnight. The victorious school is responsible for guarding the bell until the next clash between the two teams.
Not only will McCallum gain the Victory Bell at the Homecoming Game with Travis, but a Football Sweetheart as well. During the half-time show tonight one of five girls will be named Football Sweetheart.
Elected by the football team, the five nominees are Bette Banks, Nancy Beard, Vicki Hughes, Cynthia McCullough and Sheri Perry, all seniors at Mac.
Bette Banks has been in the Beauty Revue her sophomore, junior and senior years, is the second vice-president of FHA, a Student Council alternate, and a member of Red Cross, Zeta Chi Tri-Hi-Y and the K Club.
Nancy Beard is a cheerleader this year, as well as being president of Zeta Chi Tri-Hi-Y. In her junior year she participated in the Beauty Revue and Student Council. While a junior she was also treasurer of Zeta Chi.
Vicki Hughes has been a cheerleader for Mac both her junior and senior years. She won a (Trustee Scholarship Award and belongs to the National Honor Society and Zeta Chi. Vicki has also been a participant in the Beauty Revue her sophomore, junior and senior years.
Cynthia McCullough is this year’s Lady Perth. She serves as reporter-historian for Tri Kappa Tri-Hi-Y and is the senior class treasurer. She is also in the Beauty Revue this year, and is active in the Student Council and Blue Brigade.
Sheri Perry is on the girls’ varsity tennis team and is reporter for the National Honor Society. She is also a member of Zeta Chi.
Following the Homecoming Game, the Student Council is planning a two-hour dance to be held here at school.
