Jamie Miller

For Jamie Miller, McCallum is a safe haven. From photographing an opossum in a tree junior year to laughing through logarithms in Chastity Colbert’s math class, Miller will cherish their McCallum memories forever.

“I have become more independent, less of a pushover and I feel I can stand up for my personal beliefs,” Miller said. “School has gone from a place of terror to a place to learn and see friends all thanks to Mac.”

During freshman year, Miller struggled to get to the rules and expectations that came with high school. But as they adjusted, they realized that life as a Knight was a welcome change.

“For me, McCallum was a chance to learn from unbiased sources,” Miller said. “I struggled freshman year, but I absolutely loved the experience. When COVID hit, I remember thinking, ‘Oh god I just got here. How can it already be over?’ but I persevered and many of my classmates did too.”

For Miller, high school was all about trying new things. They spent three years watching the archery team grow and reach new heights. They watched people’s faces light up as they passed out Girl Scout cookies. They used their voice to spread awareness through the Students of Color Alliance senior year. But their proudest accomplishment was tutoring children in East Austin in literacy and STEAM.

“Most important to me would be my experience being a teacher’s aide for Freedom School,” Miller said. “Everyone and anyone who is interested in teaching should consider volunteering. Teaching underprivileged youth and helping build their education is critically important.”

In the fall, Miller will attend the University of North Texas to study public health on a pre-med track. Miller said teachers at McCallum have contributed greatly to their success throughout high school.

“If you are scared to talk to someone about something serious, start small,” Miller said. “The librarians and Ms. Nix and very kind and will listen. Go to art shows, ask about programs that will help you, sign up for field trips and don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. High school can be fun, you just need to find the right people.”
