When Ceder Herring visited the Colorado State campus in October, it was love at first sight.

“It was just such a welcoming environment and the campus was so beautiful it honestly just felt like the right place for me,” Herring said.

Herring plans to pursue a major in health and exercise following Colorado State’s sports medicine track. They discovered and cultivated their passion for sports medicine at McCallum in 2019 in their time as an athletic trainer.

“At the McCallum course fair in 2019, they were looking for people to sign up for sports medicine, and I wanted to be a physical therapist, so it seemed like a perfect opportunity,” Herring said. “As I spent more and more time as a Mac athletic trainer, I wanted to continue doing it.”

Herring’s teacher, Matt Johnson, McCallum’s athletic trainer, was a positive influence and energized them to continue on this trek. Inspired by Johnson’s work in schools, Herring hopes to follow in his footsteps in the future.

“Matt especially means a lot to me because he’s the reason I want a career in athletic training,” Herring said. “I still want to get my physical therapy license, but I want to spend some time around high schoolers so I can be an influence to them as Matt was to me.”

Herring will miss the community and inclusivity at McCallum. They have cherished their teachers who have been a part of their life since the start of their journey through high school.

“I’ll probably miss my teachers the most,” Herring said. “I’ve had a couple of them for the majority of high school. There’s always someone that I can go and talk to. I’ve had Cauthern as my printmaking teacher since freshman year, and Mrs.Gun and Matt Johnson since sophomore year.”

Herring’s favorite McCallum memory was the first round of football playoffs this year as it emanated iconic Mac spirit and tradition.

“When we won the first round of playoffs this year two of my best friends, Elise Crouse and Giselle Fuentes, were on the field with Blue Brigade and when the clock hit zero, we ran into each other and jumped around hugging each other,” Herring said. “Then we sang the school song while holding pinkies together.”

Herring looks to the future with a clear educational path in physical therapy and athletic training. They aspire to integrate their interests into their future career.

“Eventually, I do want to move up to college or professional level sports,” they said.

Herring looks forward to Colorado’s cool weather and fun activities and is excited to catch a break from the Texas sun.

“I’m excited to go snowboarding every weekend with friends, also to just not be in the heat all the time,” Herring said. “I don’t have a cooling system in my body, which means I don’t sweat, so being in a cooler environment will definitely be something to look forward to.”
