Six shine in JEA National Student Media Contest

MacJournalism’s good fortunes in the nation’s capital continued on Sunday Nov. 24 when the winners of the Journalism Education Association National Student Media Contest were announced.

More than half of the MacJournalists at the convention placed in the competition. Only 40 percent of the 2,126 contestants won awards.

MacJ had four honorable mention winners.

Yearbook editor in chief Mira MacLaurin won in student life copy and caption writing; Shield editor in chief Kristen Tibbetts, in sports writing; Shield design editor Mia Terminella, in commentary writing, and Shield visuals editor Bella Russo in spot news photography. Her picture—the Issue 2 cover image of student firefighters battling a propane fire—was literally ON FIRE.

Knight photojournalist Risa Darlington-Horta earned an excellent award in portrait photography, and Shield copy editor Alex Dowd earned a superior award in review writing.

Of the more than 2,100 contestants, only 144 earned a superior rating. That’s only 6.8 percent of the contestants from the top journalism programs from all across the United States.

Congrats to these winners and to all of our competitors who represented MacJournalism and McCallum High School so well on scholastic journalism’s biggest stage.
