Students donate blood at biannual drive
Junior Amelia Meinbresse saw her dad fight cancer. She saw the impact of so many community blood donors during the fight. And on Thursday, the PALS volunteers saw her come into the gym to give blood at the school blood drive.
“My dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and passed away in 2011,” she said. “A lot of people gave him blood, so that influenced me to donate.”
After being rescheduled due to the inclement weather day three weeks ago, the Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas came to the small gym Thursday. Students who are at least 17 and weight 115 pounds can donate.
The mobile donation stations set up at locations in Austin, including McCallum and around 20 other high schools.
“If we can get folks to come in and donate while they’re young, and see how it helps the community, it’s more likely to stick with them when they’re older,” blood drive employee Mike Miller said. “The more folks that are life-long or long-term donors, the better.”
