A worrisome walk home (March 2020) by Dave Winter

First-year Shield reporter Ingrid Smith chose this image of math from March 24, 2020, the day teachers came to school to collect the things they would need to teach virtual classes from home.

“To me, this photo depicts walking away from normalcy and into the unknown, walking out of the light and into the darkness,” Ingrid said. “Ms. Ashton, the teacher shown here, enlisted her adult son to help her carry supplies that she might need while teaching from home during the first stages of the unprecedented pandemic shutdown. While this photo symbolizes the undesired exit from the hallways that days before had been full of life, it also symbolizes a lasting change in education for both teachers and students. Though we have returned to these hallways once again, over a year after this photo was taken, much has changed. With COVID still looming, Ms. Ashton made her final walk through these halls as a teacher when she retired at the end of last school year.”
