The Quill and Scroll International Journalism Honor Society has announced that the 2016 Knight ranked among the top 10 yearbooks in the nation in the 2016 Yearbook Excellence Contest.

2016 graduate Hannah Ilan earned a Sweepstakes Award in the Academic Photo category for her photograph of students in Mr. Whiz’s anatomy class holding Rusty the corn snake.

Ilan, who served Mac Journalism as the design editor for the Shield in 2015-2016, was one of only 36 sweepstakes winners in the Yearbook Excellence Contest nationwide.

In addition to Ilan’s Sweepstakes Award, the Knight staff collected 10 National Gold Key Award for work published in the 2016 Knight.

Alana Raper (’17), Ashley Chamberlain (’18) and Kennedy Schuelke (’18) each earned two National Gold Key Awards. Christina Beck (’16), Myla Perry (’17), Isak Contreras (’18), Madison Olsen (’18), Georgia Boutot (’19), Sarah Lightfoot (’19), Kimberly Cochrane (’19), Molly Farkas (’19) and Celeste Montes de Oca (’19) were the other National Gold Key Awards.

This year, Quill and Scroll introduced a new staff award, the Blue and Gold Award, to honor the high school journalism programs that excelled in the 2016 Yearbook Excellence Contest. McCallum was one of only 10 high schools in the nation received this honor.

McCallum earned its Blue and Gold Award in the Comprehensive Visuals. The award honors staffs for overall excellence in graphic design, photography and photo illustration.

Overall, Quill and Scroll recognized 297 National Award winners in the 2016 Yearbook Excellence Contest. Over 1,400 entries were evaluated.

Gold Key winners are eligible to apply for college journalism scholarships in their senior year of high school. Quill and Scroll presented the contest in partnership with Balfour, Herff Jones, Jostens, Picaboo and Walsworth yearbook companies.
